Boss Men – Laser Hair Reduction

Boss Men – Laser Hair Reduction

Keeping up with body hair grooming can be such a pain.  Whether it is waxing or shaving, it’s a constant chore, costs quite a bit of money, can be difficult to do without help and can leave nicks and bumps.  Laser Hair Reduction is the latest hair reduction trend.  The results are long lasting, the procedure less painful than waxing, and it does not produce ingrown hairs or skin irritation.  Laser Hair Reduction can be done on the face and body; and is a very quick in-office treatment.

What is Laser Hair Reduction?

Laser Hair Reduction is a method of reducing the presence of unwanted hair. While there can be permanent results, it is still considered to be semi-permanent hair reduction. Over a series of 6-8 sessions spaced at proper intervals, a certain percentage of hair follicles are injured by the laser, and therefore, those hair follicles stop producing hair. As technology has improved over the years, the procedure has become much more tolerable, which in turn, has made it much more popular. Most areas of the body can be treated with hair reduction.

Is Laser Hair Reduction Permanent?

Laser hair reduction is a depletion of hair. It is not always 100% reduced or permanent. But in most cases, patients have lifelong reduction, as much as 90-95%.

How Does It Work?

At each hair reduction session, the skin is assessed for pigment and the hair is assessed for color and how thick or coarse it is. Once the assessment is complete, proper settings are selected. During the treatment, a portion of the hair follicles become damaged. This happens when the pigment in the hair absorbs the laser energy and heats the hair follicle, damaging it and preventing future growth. Ideally, up to 20% of the hair would be reduced in one session. Therefore, a series of 5-6 treatments is recommended to achieve the end goal. In some cases, additional sessions may be necessary. The results can last indefinitely, however, they can be affected by hormonal changes and other factors. The treatments can be uncomfortable; but are not usually described as painful.

Laser Hair Reduction Treatment Process

At the time of your hair reduction treatment, you should arrive with the treatment area shaved and clean (no lotions or products.) Anything that has been applied to the skin should be discussed prior to the treatment. This is a service that requires very good communication between the patient and provider. Any pigment changes due to sun exposure or self-tanner, or photosensitizing medications or products, should always be mentioned to avoid adverse effects. The treatment can take as little as a few minutes or up to an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area. After the treatment, there may be redness and heat that could last a few hours. There could also be some swelling around the hair follicles that can appear like a rash. This is called perifollicular edema. Taking antihistamines prior can help reduce the reaction. After the treatment, avoid hot tubs, swimming, excessive sweating, or anything that could introduce heat or bacteria to the area. Also, avoid applying any products other than what is recommended by your provider.

Hair Reduction Risks and Side Effects

The most important factor in avoiding adverse effects with hair reduction is evaluating the pigment in the skin. It is very important that the skin type of the patient is evaluated correctly, and any changes in pigment are noted. If there has been recent sun exposure within 2-4 weeks, the treatment may be postponed depending on pigment changes. At Skin Boss, we pride ourselves on communication and proper evaluation at each session to provide you with the most safe and effective treatments.

Who Should Try Hair Reduction?

Some patients may not be a candidate for hair reduction depending on the type of hair they want to treat, and if there are underlying conditions. Patients who have hormonal conditions that cause hair growth might not be good candidates for laser hair reduction. Light hair, such as blonde, light red or light brown may not be treatable with hair reduction, as the laser is attracted to pigment. All of these factors will be evaluated in your consultation.
