Clear + Brilliant® and Permea are two different laser wavelengths on the same platform that work by creating microscopic treatment zones in the superficial layers of the skin. The treatment is performed primarily on the face, neck, and chest. A series is typically 4 sessions scheduled every 2 weeks, and depending on the desired result often the Clear + Brilliant® wavelength, will be alternated with Permea wavelength to target different depths of the skin. The goal of the series is to turn over new cells and replace damaged skin with healthy tissue. Both immediate results and long-term results will be noticeable to the patient of an overall more youthful glow and improvement in tone and texture.

Prior to receiving the treatment, the patient will have numbing cream applied for 30 minutes to help to make the treatment more comfortable. An antihistamine can be taken to calm the skin’s response. The treatment takes a little under 30 minutes and there may be mild discomfort including heat. When the treatment is complete, sometimes a serum may be applied such as Vitamin C and then a soothing cream. Makeup can be applied immediately and then a cool compress to relieve heat. The heat will dissipate over a few hours. The skin may appear pink for a few days and have a sandpapery texture to it that will slough off naturally over 5-7 days. Patients should not rub at the skin; gentle pressure should be applied when cleansing and applying creams. Gentle cleanser and a healing cream such as Avene’s cicalfate would be recommended for 5-7 days until skin returns to normal. Avoid vigorous exercise or heat to the skin for a few days according to post care instructions.

The risks of adverse event or side effects are low with Clear + Brilliant® and Permea. The practitioner performing the treatment will discuss any recent sun exposure, medications, or topical products that have been applied to the skin prior to performing the treatment to eliminate side effects. With proper pre and post care and good communication adverse events typically do not occur. In rare cases, if a patient has a high histamine response, they could swell more than anticipated, but the use of antihistamines preventatively greatly reduces the risk of puffiness or swelling. If a patient is prone to cold sores or may have the virus that causes cold sores, an antiviral must be taken prior, which greatly reduces the risk of the virus presenting itself and causing a sore.

Clear + Brilliant® and Permea can help in improving the appearance of sun damage or unwanted brown spots in the skin, reduce pore size, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and improve overall tone and texture. The treatment is not as deep or as invasive as others, but with a series of four treatments it can produce more healthy glowing skin with less downtime than the deeper more invasive procedures. In addition to healthier skin due to cell turnover caused by the microscopic injuries, products will absorb more deeply into the skin through those channels of injury and the products will be more effective throughout the series. Serums such as Vitamin C and Brighteners can be important tools for home care to heighten results. The results can last for a good length of time, yet the skin is always aging, so much like exercise it is recommended that patients maintain the benefits with a good regimen of monthly facials and home care products. A series of Clear and Brilliant and Permea can be done once a year to maintain and assist in anti-aging and more glowing skin.

Clear + Brilliant® and Permea is great for both men and women of all ages. It’s safe on all skin types including darker skin tones, although there may be some cases where there are contraindications. Patients who are prone to hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation may not be ideal candidates for certain laser treatments. In the event that a patient is not a candidate, there are other treatments that can be suitable such as chemical peels that treat pigment and fine lines, a gentler approach in facials, or other laser wavelengths.
