Xeomin®

Xeomin® is an FDA approved prescription medicine that is used to treat muscles which improves the look of moderate to severe frown lines. It is incobotulinumtoxinA, which is a highly purified neurotoxin containing just one ingredient and no additives. This makes it less likely that a patient will become resistant to it (some patients have developed antibodies to other neurotoxins.)

The process for administering Xeomin® occurs after a thorough assessment of the patient’s medical history. Once this has been established, the skin is cleansed and possibly marked with a pencil. Xeomin® is then administered to the patient with a very small needle, and the medication is delivered into the muscle. After Xeomin®, the patient will not feel any different because the medicine will take 3-7 days to work. Most patients will see their desired look around the 14-day mark and this should last up to 3 months. The patient will return for a follow up appointment and photos. It is recommended that the patient does not participate in vigorous exercise for 24 hours, does not lay flat for 2-3 hours after treatment and does not rub the affected area. No facials or laser treatments should be performed for 2 weeks and no massages where your face is pressed into the bed during treatment for 1 week.

While wrinkle relaxers are generally considered a safe and effective treatment, it does come with a few potential side effects, just as any other procedure. Immediately following the treatment, it is common to experience slight redness or swelling around the injection sites. Bruising may occur but is rare. These side effects are normal and will disappear within a couple of days. Less common, yet serious complications may include adjacent muscles being affected. This may result in unwanted outcomes, such as a drooping eyelid. There may also be difficulty in swallowing following a procedure, yet this is a complication rarely reported.
